From Parchments to Bits: DH Tools in building Digital Corpora from Ancient Manuscripts
25 June 2020
Online Lecture by George Kiraz
While the field of Syriac Studies is one of the relatively smaller areas of the humanities, it has been successful in the development of digital humanities tools with a number of portals already available. This talk will concentrate on project Simtho which aims at building a large textual corpus with linguistic analysis but will discuss other building blocks that are required to make it viable: the role of standards (especially Unicode), the necessity of a lexical database and language analysis tools, the development of OCR models to make unpublished texts accessible to scholarship, etc. The projects discussed are all accessible at www.bethmardutho.org; attendees are encouraged to take a look prior to the talk.
